It is simply towards the wind up this starts to break apart, although slap-up finale rescues it regarding ‘red’. Admirably staged and you will smartly dialogued, it will have zero great challenge from inside the way of life off the very unsightly term.” [ 8 ]
Month-to-month Motion picture Bulletin said “The movie moves in the an easy pace, brand new dialogue try slick and you will characterisations basically energetic. The latest film’s blogger and you will director, Robert Rossen, sets up good multidimensional chess games, having mortal limits, ranging from Johnny, their company (Thomas Gomez), their boss’s wife (Ellen Drew), good cagey police inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and you will good scuffling celebrity (Evelyn Keyes) whose brother (Nina Foch) has worked on gambling establishment and you can old a good corrupt investigator (Jim Bannon). The new caustically epigrammatic program, brand new cast’s suavely regulated body gestures of like and you will possibility, and you will Rossen’s thrillingly controlled and you may stylishly assertive photos (in addition to his governmental conscience) get this pugnacious yet , detail by detail spectacle a low profile vintage of style.” [ 10 ]

Cobb, given that a police inspector, as well as up the score . Whilst the area follows a common trend, the fresh characterizations are new in addition to performances adequate so you’re able to overbalance. Dialog are terse and you will relevant, steering clear of the psychological, phoney contact. Unusual camera bases appear occasionally in order to intensify interest and briefly arrest the attention. Its mostly an issue of enjoying Mr. Powell proceed through their paces fashionably if you find yourself a massive throw out-of actors and you may actresses promote him vintage support. Evelyn Keyes plays the great nothing lady just who brings out the fresh finest in him and Ellen Drew is the easy and you may slinky vixen exactly who becomes him toward jams. Thomas Gomez is actually oily since the villain and you can Lee J. Cobb really does a different ready journey just like the an exhausted cops inspector who eventually closes the actual situation. Many sipping and you can smoking is performed by the all worried.” [ 12 ]
